Complex problems are often hard to solve by traditional problem-solving techniques. In such cases we need to think out of the box, inside the box, at each side of the box… and wherever we can. Simply because we don’t know what can solve this problem. Usually, to deal with such situations, teams prefer to go for a brainstorming session.

In old days Brainstorming word was considered a very harsh word. Because it was assumed that storming the brain sounds like neurological torture. Though the word brainstorming has earned a notable place for itself, It may certainly become torture if the sessions are not conducted well.

We can do brainstorming in many different ways. I prefer to use the Round Robin technique the most for below reasons –

  1. It allows you to control the environment for focused discussion.
  2. It is a very straightforward approach.
  3. Ideas are generated by everyone and not just by only vocal members.
  4. You can tweak it to create a variation suitable to your needs.
  5. Equally effective for small teams as well as large groups.

Now let’s see how can we use this method. These are the steps we can follow to execute Round-Robin Brainstorming :

Step 1 : Gather the participants

Identifying the right participants is the most important step of any brainstorming session. You should ensure that all possible candidates, who can help solve the problem are available in this session.

Step 2 : Explain the problem Statement

You should state the problem statement in very clear words. Be specific about the objectives of the brainstorming session. Answer questions, but discourage discussion. The goal in this step is to allow individual people to think creatively without any influence from others.

Step 3 : Collect the Initial Ideas

Distribute Index cards, if you are conducting an in-person session or provide the right online tools for a virtual setup. Now have each team member, in silence, think of one idea and write it down on an index card.

Step 4 : Pass the Ideas

Ask each person to hand in their neighbor’s card, and pass their new idea to the person next to them. Have each person use their neighbor’s idea as inspiration to create another idea.

Step 5 : Repeat

Continue this circular idea swap for as long as is necessary to gather a good amount of ideas. When the time is up, gather up all the ideas. You can now collate them, eliminate any duplicates, and discuss them further as required.

Isn’t it simple and less chaotic? Let me remind you at this stage that we can alter a few steps to suit different cases. For example –

  1. In case of a large group, we can divide them into smaller groups and run round robin on smallers groups instead of individuals.
  2. To maintain anonymous idea generation we can shuffle the cards before each pass
  3. We can customise the passes to collect counter opinions instead of additional ideas

And so on.

The core idea of this method is to collect each possible thought and make the most of the Brainstorming session. Also, this allows to make the forum comfortable for each member. Which makes it my favorite method. I would love to hear from you what is your favorite brainstorming technique.
